(TO ALL OF THE INTERNATIONALLY LOST, STOLEN, MURDERED AND UNCLAIMED CHILDREN OF COLOR)
THE RIVER WITNESS
my water churned and lashed
trying not to swallow
the tender morsels of flesh,
trying to toss the dark skin
back to the river bank,
but her humanity was
already marred and scarred
in ways unmentionable.
if she would only relax and
let me gently rock away her pain.
but she thrashed around desperately
not wanting to let go.
twelve years of memory
but mama couldn’t hear.
mama was working over time
earning the unimportant little extras
her daughter would never see.
rock-a-bye river girl, rock-a-bye.
kerscrunch went the crimson painted screwdriver
tossed out of the devil red Ford truck
i recoiled just enough to reject the unacceptable refuse
later found by a young boy gone fishing on my riverbank.
slumber river girl, slumber.
i will ever treasure your breath
in the secrets of my waterfolds.
rest brown river girl, rest…yolanthaism
(I cry for the missing children of Haiti…we in America have many missing children, but we have programs and laws in place to try to protect as well as find those who have been abducted that are not available to the lost and stolen of Haiti. We have AMBER ALERT and CODE ADAM. Thankfully many children are found alive such as Jaycee Dugard, Elizabeth Smart, Danielle Cramer, Shawn Hornbeck, Steven Stayner, Hannah Anderson, Lilian Ramirez, Martin Rosales, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight. Yet and still even in light of these miraculous recoveries, many children of color around the world and of lower socio-economic status fall off the radar of concern when they disappear. America is improving but even we have a long way to go.)
