THE EXUBERANT WIDOW OF HAITI

the exuberant widow
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A GOAT MAKES
tears
enfolded
the creases
of her eyes
but
they
refused
to fall…
for having
embraced
her pain
for so long
her joy
could
not be
fully expressed.
but
she knew
and
I knew.
we felt it
breast to breast.
i
am
my
sisters
keeper.
and
she
turned
and
walked away
with
her brand new goat.
(Her name is Louisena Hilaire. She wore the very best that she had to come see me.  She did not know her birth date or how to figure out the math of how old she was. But she knew she was born in 1949. That makes her 64 years old. She is a widow with 5 children. Her husband died in 2006. He was not sick, just died all of a sudden–I am told that it is like that often times in Haiti. She has 5 grandchildren and now a female goat. She will use the goat mainly to breed so that she can now have a way to support herself and her family. The goat went up to her as if it knew her and felt safe and right at home. I purchased the goat for $85 American money. Oh how I wish that you could have been there to feel the gratitude in her hug and see the pure unpolluted graciousness in
her eyes. I will never forget that look…my mission, in the past 3 years has changed tremendously. It has become about teaching a woman to fish rather than just feeding her a fish, or rather–TEACHING A WOMAN TO GOAT)
