HAITI BEYOND DARKNESS

a baby's cry
I
found in Haiti
that just
beyond
darkness,
underneath
the
light,
lives
a
newborn’s breath,
just
out of the reach
of
death…yolanthaism
(depending on which statistics you read and the purpose of the statistics or slant needed to accomplish some “cause” the infant mortality rate for Haiti varies considerably, likewise depending on what part of Haiti you are canvassing. According to Index Mundi, 52 our of 1000 babies do not live to reach the age of one in Haiti compared to 6 out of 1,000 in the United States of America and 2 out of 1000 in Japan. From my own personal experiences in Haiti and through my work in the mountains of Haiti, I have found the infant mortality rate to be much, much higher due to cholera, yellow fever, lack of clean water, lack of nutrition and poor to non-existent prenatal care for pregnant mothers. In the mountains, these issues can cause anywhere from 59 to 72 babies out of 100 to never make it to the age of two. Yet I have found no documentation of this futile fact anywhere.)
